WHAT CHIROPRACTIC IS:

Chiropractic is a health care system that is one of three primary health provider professions recognized by the federal government of the United States along with every state legislature in the country.  It is second in numbers of doctors and patients only to the allopathic, or medical, system of health care.  Its doctors are called D.C.’s, or Doctors of Chiropractic.

The main idea behind chiropractic care is that your nervous system, the most important bodily system you have, must be healthy in order for your entire body to properly function, be able to fight disease and be able to appropriately heal itself whenever there is a problem.  Your central nervous system is entirely encased in bone (the brain inside the skull, the spinal cord inside the vertebrae, or backbones, of your spine).  Many things can cause the bones of your spine to misalign, or subluxate (just to clarify things… a LUXATION is an old term for a DISLOCATION; a SUBLUXATION is short of a dislocation and is a MISALIGNMENT).  Sometimes, you will hear people refer to SUBLUXATIONS in their spine.  This is another word for MISALIGNMENTS.  The main thing that causes bones to subluxate, or misalign, is STRESS.  Stress comes in 3 main forms:  mechanical (traumatic and non-traumatic), chemical and emotional.  Mechanical stress is due to traumatic things like car accidents, violent falls or severe collisions, or to non-traumatic things such as the movements of everyday life (playing, working, exercising, driving, sleeping, etc.).  Chemical stress comes from anything that you put into your body, such as the food you eat, the air you breathe, the water you drink or any medications or drugs that you take or have taken.  Emotional stress comes from depression, fright, worry, etc.  Any of these kinds of stress can warp and pull at the bones and other tissues in your spine to shift them out of alignment.

Your brain communicates with every part of your body via your nervous system.  Signals and communications run constantly and very rapidly to and from your brain by way of the spinal cord and the nerve roots that come off the spinal cord and travel to every part of your body along miles and miles of nerves.  When the bones of your spine become misaligned, the tender and extremely sensitive nerve tissue that comes off the spinal cord in the form of nerve roots can become compressed.  This causes nerve irritation and inflammation, which in turn causes swelling and eventually pain.  The nerves start to die when they lose communication with the brain.  Additionally, any tissues that are served by the nerve also begin to malfunction and ultimately die.  As an example of what happens when nerves lose communication with the brain, look at someone who has become paralyzed due to a fracture of one of the bones in the neck.  When the fracture occurs, the body’s response is to try to isolate the injured area and make repairs in the form of inflammation and swelling.  Swelling is caused by increased fluid in the injured area.  Any student of Physics 101 knows that you cannot compress a fluid; it will take up the space it occupies at the expense of crushing surrounding tissues.  As the swelling increases, the spinal cord becomes compressed.  The spinal cord never tolerates compression well.  In cases of massive swelling, as in fractures, when the spinal cord becomes severely compressed and/or crushed, it dies at that level.  The muscles, skin, organs and other tissues also degenerate as a result of having no communication with the brain.  Muscles atrophy, or shrink.  Organs fail.  Since the tissues of the spinal cord cannot be repaired (at least, not yet), once severe compression or separation has taken place in the spinal cord, there is no turning back.

In a smaller way, the problems caused by subluxations in your spine can become evident in your tissues as decreased muscle function, odd feelings such as numbness and tingling, stiffness, aches and sometimes great pain.  It is the job of the Doctor of Chiropractic to properly align the subluxated bones so that proper healing can take place and the tissues function normally again due to freedom from nerve compression.

WHAT CHIROPRACTIC IS NOT:

Chiropractic care is not invasive, painful, costly, or negative in its outlook or philosophy.  The main side effects of chiropractic are improved sleep, better posture, a healthier nervous system, and a sometimes invigorating feeling of euphoria as endorphins are released into the bloodstream after an adjustment.  Additionally, your properly adjusted spine results in a healthier body that is at its very best in order to deal with problems that might arise in the form of disease or injury or increased demand.
